🔼 Grand Opening. With nearly 3,500 area school students in attendance, the Butler women’s basketball squad opened up its 2026-27 campaign with a offensive display en route to a 108-71 victory over Tennessee Tech.
The official attendance of 4,313 was the third largest crowd in Butler women's basketball history and Head Coach Maria Marchesano's first win at the helm of the Bulldogs.
Six Bulldogs scored in double figures in the contest and BU was led by Taya Ellis who had 19 points in the game.
Butler is right back at it tomorrow night in a 6:30 p.m. showdown with Lipscomb.
🔼 Crown Her. In her first professional season, former Butler standout Talia Sommer is hoisting a trophy.
Sommer and FC Gotham clinched the NWSL’s regular season championship earlier this week and will be the top-seed in the playoffs, which are scheduled to start next Monday.
The former ‘Dawg has appeared in eight games for the league champs.
🔼 Young Gun. This week, Butler's Finn Moran was selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after a strong outing in a 3-1 home win over DePaul last Saturday.
Moran played a role in all three of Butler's goals in the victory, notching a pair of assists and scoring the game winner in the 46th minute. This is the second time this season the forward has been recognized with this award.
🔼 The Defender. Back-to-back 20+ dig performances earned Butler’s Jersey Loyer BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Loyer, a junior libero, was spectacular over the weekend in Butler's two BIG EAST matches, highlighted by a career-high 27 digs in Friday's match against St. John's. She followed that with another 20-dig performance against Seton Hall in Saturday's match to help the Bulldogs secure the victory.
This marked her eighth career match with 20 or more digs as well as her second time achieving back-to-back matches with at least 20 digs.
